As a good and close friend of Frank Dye's for 43 years and 3 months, I
was saddened but not really surprised to get the news of his death from his
niece who had been keeping me informed these past few weeks. Frank was a very modest and extremely impressive Wayfarer seaman
(fantastic to sail with). One fine example of this was in Aug. 1968 where
Frank and Margaret launched W48 "Wanderer" at Esbjerg, sailed
along the perilous Jutland Westcoast, through the Limfjord and Kattegat to
arrive at Kyrkbacken, Ven. Here Frank and Margaret were with
us as we founded the SWS/Scandinavian WAYFARER Association at Bäckviken on
the island of Ven. On the sail home, Frank and Margeret started on the
rough windward and used an ordinary (2,8 sq.m) jib and a
roller-reefed mainsail while the other nine of us splashed and
sprayed along in survival mode and completed a much less skilful
‘survival-sail’ back home to DEN and Scania in more than 10m/sec (20+ knots)
and wet, steep(current on wind) breaking seas. Paul Elvstrøm told me :"Be careful that you don't get them
thinking they are Frank Dye just because of having bought a
Wayfarer!" He had seen a W. in the Kattegat Sea that was not
handled with proper skill. Our greatest Wayfarer Navigator and inspiration of all has now sailed
off beyond the horizon but will always live on with us in our memory.
Confirmed with a heavy-hearted "Honoured be Frank Dye’s Memory". Ken, W1348"Maitken", Dragør(SWS Founder Member).
